Open Source (Linux)

  • Ubuntu: My operating system of choice.
  • Fluxbox: The window manager I use for Linux. Everything I want and nothing I don't!
  • BashFAQ: This is a very useful set of tips for Bash
  • DownThemAll: An extremely handy Firefox extension that allows you to download mutliple files with a single click or small set of clicks. It's great for downloading course notes, for instance.
  • Inkscape: An awesome drawing program that is intuitive to use, and has advanced features like manual font kerning. I used this program to design the graphics for jpolak.org.
  • Valgrind: A memory-leak detector for C and C++ programs. This is the tool to use to detect those memory leaks in large programs.
  • GCC: The GNU Compiler Collection. This is a more behind-the-scenes type program but it deserves a mention, seeing as I use it for all my projects and it does a wonderful job
  • R: What I use for statistics and other random (haha) computations
  • EncFS: An encrypted filesystem using FUSE. Perfect for quickly encrypting content, as long as you don't mind leaving evidence that something is encrypted
  • Claws Mail: The email client I use. Claws has external editor support, and there is also a Windows Port (never tried the port)
  • Vim: The ultimate text editor, better than emacs ;)
  • Octave: A fairly good open source Matlab replacement.
  • Inkscape: For drawing vector art.
  • git: A quick version control system with easy branching.
  • AdBlock Plus: Get rid of internet advertisements.
